Books
I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of books, from type oriented projects to expressive ones filled with illustrations and hand lettering.
Below are a few of my favorite pieces for a range of big and small clients like Abrams, Buzzfeed and Two Lines Press.
Two Lines Journal
Two Lines Press
San Francisco, CA
The series of Two Lines Journals’ was an interesting design challenge: to create something in which Typography was the main element, allowing the reader to focus on the content and at the same time create a vibrant system that could be flexible enough to work with the variety of content and languages (Japanese, Hebrew, Polish, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and more).
To keep the publication affordable, the design was limited to a two-color print (using two Pantones) and introduced color as a tool to denote a foreign language. Each issue changed its color, giving the reader a rainbow of collectibles as timed passed.
Interesting typographic elements were designed to pique the reader’s curiosity, while helping them find their place in the publication, like a running header of languages (indicated by a character) and a Language Index.
One of the biggest challenges was to find typographic choices that would serve each language and work well with the main typeface of the publication.
When Abrams reached out to work on this journal, I was back home in Venezuela, visiting my two amazing grandmothers. Both of them are incredible, hard working and they love to tell stories, but still there’s so much I don’t know about them. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to work on something that could potentially extend and better family relationships and bring myself closer to them.
It was quite an interesting project, since Abrams had a very strong direction in mind for this project. They wanted a mix of watercolors that ranged through floral, abstract and geometric and where quite specific about the look they were going for. It was a fun challenge to take their direction and marry it with my interpretation for this.
Stories from my Grandchild
Abrams
New York, N.Y.
The brief for this one was pretty fun: to create something different for each spread of the book! The idea was to have a nice finished piece to give Buzzfeed employee’s at the end of the year, something that would reflect the mission, stories and anecdotes that reflect Buzzfeed’s personality.
